I’ve !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but seriously: how the fuck do you curb a wheel all the way round? I mean, I understand misjudging where the curb is and clipping it. I ’ve been known to do it myself - I’m sure most of us have. But grinding it along the edge for (pi*18"=) damn near 5 feet? That takes a special kind of skill.
Not deep, fortunately, so hopefully repairable. But FUUUUUCCCCKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!
ETA: Six and a half feet not five - forgot to add the sidewalls to the diameter. Even more of an achievement!

That sucks, I’m sorry.

That is impressive. Very impressive. But also confusing. Like did she rub and decide it wasn’t worth stopping the grind?

Time to invest in a set of these?

OMFG my wife lightly curb rashed one of the beautiful 18s in my GTI and one on the Volvo, though fortunately one of the ugly snow wheels. I did my best to muffle the screams.

See, this is why I worked so hard to keep my wife’s Corolla running.
In all seriousness:

I forsee my GF being this bad.
the mistake will happen ONCE then i’m going to never let her drive my car again.

I honestly have no idea. The best explanation I could get out of her was “the park was a very difficult shape”.

:-)
If it was her Leaf, I wouldn’t care. I’ve given up on fixing (or cleaning) that, she’s made such a mess of it. But this time she was driving MY car, and that hurts.

I can’t even do a grind that long on a skateboard.

So a tapering corner and just plow through and let the curb correct the car?
I know how it feels. My hubcaps used to be pristine but a tire shop scratched one and a few family members have taken their toll on the wheels as well. It's nothing compared to what they've done to the bodywork though.
My mom’s current car still has a hideously defaced run from when someone rammed a curb hard enough to bend the front subframe but they also aren’t very pretty wheels to begin with. Those Skoda wheels are too pretty to deface. Needs more sidewall though.

Ma n, you seriously need to practice then. I still can and I only break out my board about once a year nowadays . Mind you, I was pretty darn shit hot back in the 7 0s when I was like 12 - the muscle memory doesn’t completely go away.

Bloody hell ouch.
Does your insurance cover wheel damage and repair?
Though mine are covered. I had a knock in one car and whilst in the shop for repair, the shop repaired the two wheels on that side for free, even though it wasn’t on the insurance claim quote which just stated, 'front bumper and offside front headlight'.
I got him some beers though.
![]() 08/31/2020 at 01:13 |

I guess.
Seriously nee ds more sidewalls - and that’s after I se arched for ages to find damn near the only VRS in the country that doesn’t have the optional larger wheels, which are on 35s: lord knows who at Skoda decided a 35 profi le was sensible for a car mos t folks are going to use as a DD.
More than that, it needs rims which don’t invite curbs . I don’t understand this modern fash ion for protruding rims - I understand modern FWD suspension needs negative o ffset so deep dish wheels are gone, but it can’t be impossible to keep the rims inside the sidewalls can it?
![]() 08/31/2020 at 01:15 |

Probably. But my excess is higher than the cost of a repair. If it needs replacing I’ll probably make a claim though.

VAG seems really bad at that. I think they like that look where the wheels are really prominent and have that k inda “sharp edge” look to them? I ran the exact same tires on my A4 that I had on my E46 before it and the wheels would get scratched at the slightest run-in with the curb, while the E46 had no problem. Supposedly they sell tires with special “rim guards” (thick protruding sidewalls as far as I can tell) but I never tried them. My current X3 has the wheel well further in than the tire and plenty of sidewall.

Off-topic: You have the Potenza S007, how do you like them ?
Asking because that is the only non-OEM
tire that is available in my size. The OEM is Pirelli P-Zero which gets
mixed reviews on performance cars
.

Mine are the S007A, which I believe is a lower spec version, with the S007 only being available in the profiles used by high end machinery. So it may not be a useful opinion for you. But they’ve been good, for a DD’d car. I never hammer the Skoda much past 7/10ths (that’s what the 86 is for), but at that pace they feel nicely controlled. The ride and noise are excellent and the wet grip has never given me cause for concern. They’ve lasted darn well, too: it had its first set of replacements a few months ago with 65,000 km on the clock.
In my size (and country) they’re close in price to PS4s, and I chose to put another set of Bridgestones on, which I guess is as good a recommendation as you can get.
Given the choice between that and a PZero I’d go S007 every time: my experience of Pirellis ( in general) has been that they’re built to sell cars not to be used : they’re great for a bout the first 25% of treadwea r, then go off badly.

Yah fuck. I’m rocking my gouged to hell wheels still, cause I can’t park and I’m too much of a cheapskate to fix or replace em.

Thanks! Sounds like it’s a pretty good tire.

Oh okay. My insurance doesn’t charge an excess on the first repair on wheels each year, if I get a wheel or wheels repaired again within a year, then I have an £80-100 excess, which is okay if it's multiple wheels but cheaper to pay out of pocket if it's just the one wheel.

this is why i prefer steel rims

That is spectacular...and not in a good way.

I wouldn’t bother with the repair, if that happened once, they are certainly going to get scratched again. Or at least wait until you need new tires and then get some wider ones so they rub on the sidewall rather than the rim.

Might be time for some training wheels -
![]() 08/31/2020 at 08:36 |

I don’t know. It’s crazy to think that those were the smaller wheels. And to think that you could have had even smaller rubber bands.
No, it shouldn’t be too difficult to not have the wheel stick out from the sidewalk but OEMs rarely seem to think about that. Or at least give cars a little more sidewall so that you can breath around curbs.
It seems like one of the bigger arguments for SUVs and CUVs right now is wheels with actual sidewall and enough suspension travel and softening that you don't get rattled around over rough roads.

Yo, what the fuck is going on over in England? Your car insurance covers wheels and tires?

Ooof...
Mrs. addiction has an affinity for concrete poles in drive-thrus and parking garages... Thankfully that hasn’t visited upon her new car yet (knocks wood).

Not all insurance does, just like not all cover free windscreen replacement should it crack or be damaged by a stone, etc... that can’t be repaired, but I a sked what extras or options they had. Some garages have a plan you can take out to cover wheel damage. It pays to ask insurance providers what they cover as standard, what they can cover as an option as well as policy price and how much excess you need to pay.
A colleague has a no-claim protected, no excess to pay repair option, so if he has a knock (like when he backed into another car, but the other car was not damaged at all), he can got i t repaired by his insurance without it affecting his policy (mine, I have to pay a £100 excess first).

You want a real head scratcher? I used to have a set of wheels that were curbed...
on the inside, but not the outside.
How does THAT happen?
![]() 08/31/2020 at 09:37 |

OK so in England the excess is what we call a deductible here in the States. One new thing learned today.
I was aware you CAN get wheel & tire insurance, it was just the way the conversation went made it sound like it was a very standard thing across the pond.

Oh right, ye’, sorry.
There are so many companies competing, many of which are part of a bigger insurance company.
It really is worth getting quotes on policies online, phoning around and asking questions on what is and isn’t covered, what can be added to the policy, etc...
Some people settle for basic coverage because of price or convenience, then when they come to make a claim, find what they thought would be covered as standard, isn’t.
A neighbour when someone hit the corner of his parked can, admitted fault and said their insurance company would cover everything and my neighbour needn't do anything. But he notified his insurance it had happened anyway out of piece of mind and they didn't have to do anything. Well the following year his premiums (policy cost) went up as he had an accident on the policy. He asked them how and why, as they didn't have to do anything (they did nothing at all), didn't make a claim, etc... they told him because he notified them it was noted on his policy, even though it wasn't his fault, didn't make a claim or ask them to push any paperwork around. He told them to f**k off and cancelled his policy and moved elsewhere but had to explain the accident noted on his prior policy but his new provider got in touch with the old one for them to remove it, which they did.

Time to for wider rubber? I kind of really like not having worry about curbing when parking, tires take the hit with no complaints.
Or just get something like a Jimn y.

I just bought a skateboard with the intention of making it easier to travel between classes on campus. I only learned how to skateboard a couple days ago and I’m kinda terrible at it. I also bought the wrong ki nd of skateboard for cruising long distances. I have no idea what I’m doing...

“ But grinding it along the edge for (pi*18"=) damn near 5 feet? That takes a special kind of skill.”
Kind of easy. Say you’re coasting @15mph, looking ahead at a truck trying to do an 8 point turn on a street, wondering “wtf is this guy doing” while slowing drifting to the side . ( 15mph *5280feet/mile /3600s/hour ) thats 22feet a second. so 1/4 of a second. that that I’m self reflecting

They sure as heck don’t make my 70s vintage Roller brand flexdeck board any more. But what’s the point in having it if I can’t give it some more battle scars every so often.

That’s how I got back into it. My board had been sitting in the back of the garage for decades, only coming out when I needed a wheeled platform to move something heavy, but then I got a job which was about a mile down a gentle hill from my house, and decided skate there and bus back would be more fun on a nice day than driving. Followed fairly quickly by the realization that skateboarding’s like riding a bike: the muscle memory doesn’t really go away. Took me a few weeks to adapt to being taller, heavier, and a lot less flexible than I was last time I used a board in anger, and I doubt I could ever be *good* again, but I got back to “don’t embarrass yourself in front of the Yoof” level pretty quickly. A fifty-something guy cruising through traffic and popping an Ollie over curbs still gets som e funny looks though
